How Nigeria Can Derive Maximum Benefit from Its 4000 Megawatts –Company Boss

An energy solution expert, Mr. Valentine Ozieh said more Nigerians can benefit from the less than 4000 megawatts of electricity the country is generating at the moment if the citizenry adopts culture of energy conservation.

Ozieh, who is also the managing director of Concession Development Company, CDC also commended the federal government for the setting up a National Steering Committee on Demand Side Management that will devise ways of curbing wasteful and inefficient consumption of electricity in the country.

Professor Barth Nnaji, Special Adviser to President on Power had indicated during the setting up of the Committee that about 1,000 of Nigeria’s 3,500-megawatt current electricity consumption could be conserved and put to productive use through initiatives that encourage consumers to use electricity more efficiently.

Ozieh noted that apart from reduction in cost, a more efficient use of electricity is one now one of the key targets of addressing global warming issues around the world.

The CDC boss noted that there are basic energy conservation measures which government can encourage among the citizenry like the replacement of the traditional incandescent bulbs with energy-efficiency models, such as CFLs.

Ozieh said this is why CDC has initiated the idea of Nigeria Clean Energy Access Programme, N-CEAP, an initiative designed to reduce power consumption which has the consequence of reducing carbon emissions and other greenhouse gases.

The managing director said under the NCEAP initiative, CDC will distribute 400 million energy efficient bulbs and fluorescent tubes over the next three years while 100 million of the bulbs will be distributed as part of Nigeria’s contribution to the achievement of article 12 of Clean Development Mechanism, CDM of Kyoto Protocol which has two main objectives of sustainable development and carbon emission reduction under the NCEAP initiative.

The company is also encouraging Nigerians to shift from the use of generators to cleaner energy sources like solar and inverter.

“If 100 million conventional bulbs and tubes in Nigeria today were replaced with an equal number of NCEAP energy efficient bulbs and tubes, an estimated 3,640 mw would have been saved. This means the nation would be spending an average of only N50 billion on energy saving bulbs to save over N1.1 trillion in power generation, transmission and distribution of 3,640mw of electricity”, Ozieh added.

“The net effect for the average Nigerian household and corporate organization is an instant reduction in power generation consumption and costs”, said Ozieh.
