FRSC Threatens To Auction Vehicles
The Federal Road Safety Commission, Eket Unit, Akwa Ibom, has threatened to auction abandoned vehicles to members of the public.
Mr. Aliyu Bukar, the Unit Commander, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Eket.
He decried the high number of abandoned vehicles, especially motorcycles, adding that the trend had become a menace to the commission.
“Some of them have been here for more than four years and we have up to 100 motorcycles and three cars abandoned for minor offences.
“Instead of paying the fines and removing them, the owners abandoned them to rot,†he said.
Bukar urged the legitimate owners to come and remove their vehicles and warned that the unit would be compelled to auction them to decongest the office.
He said the vehicles posed security challenges as they could be used by miscreants to plant bombs.
The commander also said that the partial ban of commercial motorcyclists had led to influx of motorcyclists into Eket which posed additional challenges to FRSC and other road users.
Bukar said the commission would not tolerate the operation of commercial motorcyclists which failed to comply with the existing regulations.
“Eket cannot be a place for disorderliness for all kinds of people.
“We are committed to sanitise the operation of commercial motorcycles to ensure that they operate within the confines of the law,†he said.
