The Progressive People Alliance (PPA) on Sunday in Abuja threw its weight behind the process of accreditation of voters being adopted by INEC in the forthcoming general elections.
Chief Sam Nkire, PPA National Chairman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the party appreciated the process considering that it worked successfully for the country in 1993. Political parties had differed on the process which provided for all voters to be accredited between 8 a.m and noon after which voting would commence by 12:30 simoultenously in 120,000 polling units across the country. “PPA duely supports INEC on what is in existence right now. “Some people are saying there should be no acreditation or that people should be allowed to move in and out, PPA is glad that INEC was able to resist that move,†he said.
Nkire argued that the process was ideal for the purpose of forestalling a breakdown of law and order as well as prevent rigging. He called on security agencies to be apolitical and ensure that whoever foments trouble on election day was arrested. The PPA National Chairman blamed the rising spate of violence across the country on the “must win†attitude of politicians. “This time around it will be the last time this violence will be perpetuated, I want to believe that security agencies are going to be apolitical and non partisan. “If they remain so any person or party agent that foments trouble should be arrested,†Nkire said. He further urged the electorate to devote election days for the purpose of elections and insist their votes count by staying behind after voting to observe the counting. According to him, there will be meaningful results if people resist attempts to rig the election.
