Surety Arraigned For Failing To Produce Accused
The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned a surety, Cletus Okeke, over alleged inability to produce an accused in court.
Okeke was charged before Mr. B.O. Osunsanmi of Somolu Magistrate’s Court.
The surety, however, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Insp. A. Adegoke, said that Okeke stood as a surety in a case between the state Commissioner of Police and one Chigozie Eze.
“You entered into a bond to produce the defendant in court anytime the case is mentioned, but the case had been called several times; neither you nor the defendant was in the court,†he said.
Adegoke submitted that Okeke was aiding the escape of Eze in order to pervert the course of justice.
He noted that the alleged offence was contrary to Section 132 of the Administration of Criminal Justice, Laws of Lagos State.
The magistrate admitted Okeke to bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case till April 11 for further hearing
