The Presidential Committee on Public Awareness on Security and Civic Responsibilities on Thursday condemned reported cases of election violence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government inaugurated the committee on March 30.

The Chairman of the Committee and Secretary-General, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Dr. Lateef Adegbite, made the condemnation while briefing news men in Abuja.

Adegbite said “as the nation approaches the 2011 elections, death threats, assassinations and thuggery have unfortunately become the order of the day.

“These should not be the case; for politics is no warfare, therefore, elections should not be a matter of life and death.

“These acts of violence clearly and adversely affect the image of our nation and also undermine its corporate existence as well as the consolidation of our emergent democracy.

“It is in the face of these negative developments that the committee has been established to address the growing challenges in security in the country,” he added.
