2nd April, 2011
The National Assembly election which was rescheduled from Saturday, 2 April to Monday, 4 April will now take place on Saturday 9 April, 2011.
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega announced this on national television today.
He said the presidential election which was to take place on 9 April will now be conducted on 16 April while the governorship and State Assembly polls scheduled for Saturday 16 April will now hold on Tuesday 26 April.
The parliamentary election was postponed on 2 April after voting had started in some parts of the country following reports that result sheets for the election were not supplied with other election materials to some states.
While announcing the postponement on Saturday 2 April, Jega blamed vendors for the late supply of the vital election materials, even though he had assured Nigerians on the eve of the polls that INEC was ready to conduct the election.
Though he apologised for the postponement, the development has drawn the ire of Nigerians who believe Jega has taken them for an expensive ride.
With the false start by INEC, there has been widespread outrage against Jega and his team for failing to deliver on their promise in spite of the billions of naira given to them to conduct the polls.
