Postponed Elections: NHRC Asks Jega To Resign

The National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria in a statement today asked Jega to resign, accusing him of incompetence and creating a “national fiasco of monumental significance” with the postponement of the National Assembly elections.

“Prof. Attahiru Jega’s position as Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is no longer tenable. He must now step down immediately in the national interest,” said Roland Ewubare, Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission.

“Prof. Jega was given almost one billion dollars to run this election – and he can’t even get ballot papers printed on time?

“He has created a national fiasco of monumental significance.

“A lot of man hour and financial outlay had gone into the preparation of the election and everybody had expected a fair outing from INEC which got all the needed support from President Goodluck Jonathan, the Federal Government and the generality of Nigerians.
