Committee On Youth Council Inaugurated

The Lagos State Government has inaugurated an eight-member caretaker committee for the state chapter of the National Youth Council.

The council’s activities had been suspended since 29 March, 2009 due to factional crisis within it, prompting the intervention of the state House of Assembly.

The House of Assembly, as part of measures to stem the crisis, forwarded a communiqué to the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development that the council’s name which hitherto had been the Lagos State Youth Council be reverted to the National Youth Council, Lagos State Chapter.

It added that the Lagos State Youth Forum and Lagos State Youth Council should be dissolved and that all chapters in local governments should bear the new name.

The House further advised the Office of Youth and Social Development to set up a caretaker committee to run the council and organise elections.

In consonance with these recommendations, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Youth and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, set up an eight- man caretaker committee which has Mr. Abiola Shomoye as its Chairman while Mr Kayode Odunuga, Oladeinde Balogun, Olayiwola Adekunle, Abolanle Balogun and Mrs. Abiodun Ajayi as members. Mr. Razak Lawal, whose status on the committee is that of an observer is the representative of the Office of Youth and Social Development on the committee while Alhaji A.O. Alapafuja is to act as an adviser to the committee.

Badru charged members of the committee which has a 90-day tenure, commencing from the day of inauguration, to cooperate with one another and work towards a common goal, stating that it behove all them  to challenge the state government by coming up with programmes to move the state forward.
