Ogun Customs Impounds N14m Goods
The Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted contraband at over N14 million in the last two weeks.
Acting Controller of the command, Deputy Comptroller Richard Oteri, who disclosed this to journalists said the goods were intercepted when they were been brought into the country through unapproved routes.
He said the items include 186 bags of 50kilogrammes of rice, 463 cartons of imported frozen poultry products, 270 kegs of palm oil, 332 kegs of 25 litres of vegetable oil, small retail packs of vegetable oil, non-alcoholic drinks, medicated soaps and other domestic items. Oteri disclosed that he has called for support of the army to secure the seizure of the contrabands.
Oteri expressed concern at the level of collaboration smugglers enjoy from villagers and communities, warning that any person found guilty of smuggling or assisting smugglers would be punished.
He charged the community leaders and youths to resist baits from smugglers, stressing that the government would deal severely with anyone caught, through arrest and prosecution, in addition to a forfeiture of seized goods.
