Stakeholders Task INEC On Election Materials
Stakeholders in Mubi, Adamawa, on Monday urged INEC to ensure prompt and adequate distribution of election materials for the April 9 National Assembly elections.
The elections could not hold last Saturday due to the non-delivery of election materials, forcing the electoral commission to shift the polls to April 9.
The stakeholders, including voters, political parties and their candidates, called for effective measures to ensure early distribution of election materials across the country.
A cross-section of the stakeholders told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews that the need for adequate preparation was imperative to forestall any recurrence.
Alhaji Malam Yahaya, the ACN Chairman in Mubi North Local Council Area, called for calm and urged Nigerians to support the commission to facilitate the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.
Yahaya commended the courage of the commission in addressing the problem and for consulting with relevant stakeholders in drafting a new election timetable.
“It is important for INEC to utilise the period and make good arrangement for the elections.
“INEC should ensure early and adequate distribution of election materials, especially in the rural areas,†he said.
Musa Ayuba, a voter, said the postponement of the elections had dashed the hopes of the electors.
“We have high expectations about the elections, but this development has exposed the enormity of problems and challenges facing our democracy,†Ayuba said.
Alhaji Abdulrahaman Gella, a Labour Party candidate in the Mubi South state constituency, urged the Federal Government to investigate the circumstances which led to the rescheduling of the general elections and prosecute those responsible for the development.
Gella also called for an effective awareness campaign to mobilise massive participation in the elections.
