Abike Dabiri-Erewa Encourages Women To Participate In Politics

A member of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has advised Nigerian women to participate in politics and refused to be intimidated by men.

Dabiri- Erewa gave the advice in Lagos at a summit with the theme: “Women In Politics and Empowerment’’ organised by the Imo State Towns Development Association, ISTDAL, Women’s Wing, Lagos State chapter.

Dabiri who was the guest speaker at the event explained that politics in Nigeria is characterized with violence, adding that it is when more women get involved that the right political atmosphere can be built for social development and violent-free politics in Nigeria

She regretted that women were not encouraged to participate in politics in Nigeria because of cultural beliefs and values in the society. She advised men to allow their wives to be involved in politics, saying as mothers they will bring the stability needed in Nigerian politics.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Etofolam Osuji also noted that women were neglected in politics because of their gender and called for a change of attitude. He encouraged women to participate in politics and contribute to the development of the country.

The president of the association, Lady Blessing Mbonu explained that the summit was the third in subsequent years and was meant to enlighten Nigerian women to know their rights and responsibility in the society. She urged the men to empower their wives and allow them to participate in politics.
