The Chairman, Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr. Rufus Oladele Adekanye, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to put its house in order and ensure it closes all loopholes before Saturday’s election.

According to him, although the postponement of last Saturday’s election was a sad development, “it was better to have a credible election than a shoddy one,” while urging the electorate not to be discouraged but go out this Saturday to exercise their civic duties.

Blaming the leadership of INEC for the development, the council boss described the decision as belated as Nigerians were already mobilised for the election before the shift, which he said, created a lot of discomfort.

He, however, expressed support for the leadership of the electoral umpire, saying his belief INEC’s credibility remained unshaken.

According to him, “I believe those who are asking Jega to resign are those trying to perpetrate crisis during the election, frustrate the electoral process and create a situation where the military may even think of coming back.”

“The whole thing is unfortunate because INEC boss did not make up his mind in time, if he had done that, he would have saved us the kind of terrible embarrassment that this nation has been put internationally. He made a terrible error of judgment,” he added, while advising the people of Lagos and Lagos Mainland in particular, not to allow the postponement to dampen their enthusiasm, but see it as one of the sacrifices to be made for democracy and credible elections.

“The whole thing is unfortunate because I appeal to you to turn out and perform your civic duties,” Adekanye pleaded.
