Police Officer Arraigned For Failure To Produce Suspect

A retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Alhaji Abiodun Sanni, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, over an alleged failure to produce an accused he stood for as surety.

In a one-count criminal charge number B/14/2011 filed before the court by the police prosecutor from Force Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police Annex, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos, Susan Ezema, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, it was alleged that Alhaji Abiodun Sanni, on 2 December, 2009, at the Administrative Section of the Force CID, took one Ojukwu Chukwunoye on bail and promised to produce him at the police station any time his presence was required until the case against him was charge to court and finally disposed off.

However, the accused retired police officer failed to produce the suspect to the police and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 126 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 32 Volume 2 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria.

The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties who must possess three years tax clearance, while the case was adjourned till 15 April, 2011.
