Bankole, Iyabo, Danjuma, Omisore, Oyinlola Defeated In Polls

The National Assembly election held across Nigeria yesterday produced numerous upsets and unfurled clear signs that the nation’s political complexion is about to change.

In the elections which were largely peaceful, the Action Congress of Nigeria put up a very good performance, especially in the South West.

In Ogun State, the turnout was poor, forcing political leaders like Chief Olusegun Osoba to embark on house-to-house “get-out-the vote” drive. At the end of the day, the Action Congress of Nigeria routed its opponents.

The ACN won all the three senatorial seats in Ogun State, namely Ogun Central, Ogun East and Ogun West.

In Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, PDP, lost her seat to Gbenga Obadara of ACN, who polled 102,116 to Iyabo’s 56,372. House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole was similarly defeated in his Abeokuta South Federal Constituency by ACN’s Olusegun Samuel Williams who polled 28,490 votes to Bankole’s 23,103.

In Osun State, the ACN also swept aside political heavyweights such as Senator Iyiola Omisore, former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

Omisore was defeated by ACN’s Babajide Omoworare who scored 119,852 votes to Omisore’s 51,315. Omoworare had run against Omisore in 2007 but lost the fraudulent election to Omisore. Omoworare went to court, but the re-ordered re-run was similarly rigged in favour of Omisore. Former governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola was trumped by Prof. Sola Adeyeye in the battle for Osun West. Adeyeye ran in 2007 but he was announced to be a loser by the former INEC led by Professor Maurice Iwu.

In Osun Central, Mudashiru Hussein of ACN defeated former governor of Osun State, Isiaka Adeleke.

In Oyo State, Kamorudeen Adedibu lost his Oyo South senate seat. He came third in the race won by ACN’s Femi Lanlehin who polled 127,691 votes to push Accord Party candidate, Nike Lawal to second place with 118,256 votes. Adedibu polled 92,359 votes.

In Katsina, ex-President Umar Yar’Adua’s daughter, Maryam of PDP lost to Mohammad Tukur of CPC in the Katsina Federal Constituency election.

The result in Edo South Senatorial District had not been released officially as at the time of filing this report, but P.M.NEWS can confirm that the ACN candidate in the District, Edobor Uzamere is leading with a wide margin against Senator Daisy Danjuma, wife of the former Minister of Defence, Theophilus Danjuma.

In the 35 units of the Edo South senatorial district visited yesterday, PDP only won five while the ACN won in the remaining 30.

Writing on his facebook wall, ex-Governor Oyinlola’s conqueror, Prof Adeyeye said: I won! Four years ago, the merchants of do or die politicking did not allow me to vote for myself. Today, they have been soundly defeated in all 10 local governments of Osun Central Senatorial District. Now, we must give Nigeria a worthy Senate.Thank you God.”
