Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Lagos State has condemned a statement credited to the State Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Mr Jonas Agwu that Lagos deserves gold medal for bad driving habit.

According to ACN in an interview with the Daily Sun of 8 April  2011 published on page 25 of the paper the State Sector Commander said: “when it comes to breaking traffic laws Lagosians are probably second to none in Nigeria. Such bad habits include phoning while driving, over speeding, jumping on motor bike without using crash helmet, obstructing free flow of traffic, etc.”

The statement signed by the party’s state publicity secretary, Joe Igbokwe, read: “Now, if the Federal Government and its agency, the Federal Road Safety Corps, had been up and doing in carrying out its statutory obligations to Lagos State as the economic hubof Nigeria there would not have been any need for the response because the commander is simply warning Lagosians to apply caution. But in Lagos we are saddled with a Federal Road Safety Corps that is irredeemably incompetent, corrupt and weak. Lacking in ideas and confidence, this moribund parastatal of the federal government drive to the corners of our streets everyday to extort money from motorists at the slightest provocation. They have abandoned their oversight functions of managing traffic, educating, training drivers to save lives and property.

Lagos State Government’s LASTMA has always filled the gap left by FRSC. The only time you find FRSC staff trying to justify their pay-packets every month is when the President is coming to Lagos . Working together with the police they block major roads in Lagos even when the President is still having his bath in Abuja , thereby compounding traffic situations in the metropolis. Today, Friday April 8 2011 Lagosians suffered again this man’s inhumanity to man. Lagosians suffered traffic gridlock as a result of this insensitivity.”

The party leader added that instead of drawing the attention of the government to the miserable and deplorable condition of the federal roads in Lagos which has worsened the traffic situation in the  commercial city Lagos, the staff of FRSC sit in their rickety offices to do armchair criticisms. Instead of insulting and abusing Lagosians, the Lagos ACN thinks that the best thing to do is for them to be proactive in carrying out their duties, emulate Lagos State Government for taking affirmative actions in dealing with the traffic situation in Lagos and complement the efforts. Dealing with the traffic problems in Lagos should be a collective responsibility of all the critical stakeholders, FRSC inclusive.

“Throwing up our hands in total surrender and pointing accusing fingers is the lazy man’s approach to addressing problems,” the party said.
