The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Prof. Bamidele Badejo, has warned motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in order so as to avoid accidents on highways as the rainy season is fast approaching .
Badejo also advised them to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles and check the functionality of their wipers, headlight lamps and other vehicle gadgets before leaving home every day, especially during the rainy period so as to avoid unnecessary breakdown on the road.
The commissioner gave the warning as a result of weather forecast which revealed that there would be heavy rainfall this year in Lagos State, stressing that for safe driving in wet weathers, motorists should be vigilant as it will be more difficult to see other vehicles, road signs and the road itself.
“This present administration places a high premium on traffic safety and I am unhappy that multiple accidents occur during the rainy season. Many of these accidents are preventable, but are caused by careless drivers who do not realise that during raining season, driving is fundamentally different.
“Drivers should allow for more travel time, drive at a slower pace than normal, having it in mind that traffic is likely to be moving slower as well as there is also the possibility that pre-planned routes may be flooded or witness heavy rain and as such should respect the rights of other road users,†he said.
