The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced that the stalemated Anambra Central Senatorial election will be conducted again to decide a clear winner.
Former governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige and former Information Minister, Dr. Dora Akunyili are locked in a gritty battle over who actually won last Saturday’s parliamentary election.
While Akunyili contested on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Ngige is flying the banner of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN. No date has been announced for the rerun.
The controversy surrounding the outcome of the election led to the resignation of the INEC Returning Officer for the Anambra Central Senatorial District election, Mr. Alex Anene.
Anene, who quit yesterday, said his life was in danger for refusing to accept the N10 million bribe one of the two candidates offered him to announce a falsified result.
He said while speaking to the press yesterday that his training and conscience won’t allow him accept the bribe.
According to Anene, “there were advances on me to announce the mutilated result with an offer of N10 million, a duplex and training of some of my children by people suspected to be agents of one of the interested parties. But my conscience was against such things. My life is in danger now. I don’t know where to go, that is why I ran to you the press.â€
