SSS Arrests Lawmaker Over Printing Of Fake Ballot Papers

The State Security Service in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State says it has arrested a member of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Willy Bassey and two other persons over 2,000 copies of fake ballot papers at a printing press in Eket.

 

Addressing journalist this morning, SSS Director in the state, Mr. Toma Minti said that acting on a tip off, his operatives raided a printing press in Eket where the fake ballot papers were found.

 

He noted that during interrogation, the manager of the printing press, Bright Etu revealed that Hon. Bassey had made the order for the printing of 12,000 copies of ballot papers of which only 2,000 had been printed.

 

He added that Hon. Bassey, Bright Etu and the proprietor of the printing press were promptly arrested.

 

When the trio were brought before journalist, Bassey confirmed that he had actually ordered for the printing of the ballot papers but that it was meant for enlightenment purpose.

Bassey who had just decamped from PDP to CPC after losing in the primaries said that he decided to print the specimen ballot papers to enlighten his supporters who mistakenly voted for other parties by thumb printing on the wrong space.

 

He noted that he specifically asked the printer to print ‘specimen’ on top of the ballot papers to show that it was not the original ballot paper.

 

The printer confirmed what Hon. Bassey said but noted that he was in the process of indicating that the ballot papers were specimen before the SSS operatives arrested him.

 

The SSS Director also confirmed that the film seized from the printer had a specimen imprint.
