The Katsina State Government on Thursday continued its strategic moves to reverse the loss of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party during last Saturday’s National Assembly election as it doled out a whopping N250 million interest-free loan facility to farmers in the state.

It also approved the distribution of tractors to the farmers in a move aimed at soliciting for their votes.

PDP suffered the heaviest defeat in Katsina State in the ongoing elections as it lost its three senatorial seats, and 12 out of 14 House of Representatives seats to the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC.

The results which sent shock waves through the home state of the late president Umaru Yar’Adua, and the presidential candidate of the CPC, Muhammadu Buhari, had forced the PDP back to the drawing board to reverse the defeat.

Governor Ibrahim Shema had earlier on Tuesday met with workers’ unions where he yielded to their demands in order to placate them ahead of the remaining elections.

Shema said the loans were in categories of N1million, N500,000 and N250,000.

The governor added that the tractor loans would also be given to the farmers at 50 per cent subsidy. He explained that the 340 tractors that had been acquired at N7.4 million each would be given to the farmers at half the price.

He added that ploughs and ox-cart loans would be given to subsistence farmers who are expected to repay the loans in four years.

State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Sani Fago, said the loans were in response to the farmers’ request for assistance from the government and denied insinuations that the real farmers in the state would not have access to the loans.

Secretary of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Sani Danfari, praised the government for the assistance and pledged the farmers’ support for Shema’s administration.
