The Executive Director of Institute for Media and Society, Akin Akingbulu has called on journalists to create more media awareness for women politicians in Nigeria.

Speaking during a parley with journalists at the southwest zonal office of IMS in Ikeja, Lagos, Akingbulu said that a situation where women politicians in the country occupy about 7 percent of political offices from the ward to the federal level is unacceptable.

He said: “In a country, where male politicians dominate virtually every political position has over the years created room for imbalance and inequality at the political scene.”

According to him, this is not a good omen for the political image of Nigeria, as it gives the impression that Nigerian women are inferior and therefore should be relegated to the background as far as politics is concerned.

Akingbulu, who worked for years with TheNEWS magazine, further explained that with more media reports creating awareness for women to participate actively in politics at various levels, the economy of the country could be better for it, as it has been proven that women, if encouraged, supported and motivated could be good managers of human and economic resources.
