Corps Members Want Election Postponed In Jigawa
Members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, serving as INEC ad hoc staff in Jigawa state have called for the postponement of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state.
They have raised an alarm over threat their lives by opposition parties ahead of the Tuesday 26 April elections.
Their fear stems form the fact that scores of them were either maimed or killed during the post-election violence that swept through several northern states this week.
A statement they sent to P.M.NEWS reads:
“Sir, in reaction to INEC announcement that they have postponed election in Kaduna and Bauchi states, we corp members in Jigawa state, as a matter of urgency, are also calling for the same action in Jigawa state because tension is very high in this state too.
“The opposition parties are now threatening corps members that if PDP wins again they will  attack us. Meanwhile, we have displayed a high sense of integrity in discharging our duties by conducting free and fair elections since this general elections started.
“These opposition parties’ threats are very real due to the fact that some youth corps members’ lodge were burnt in Hadejia a local government in Jigawa state and corps members were also killed and wounded. We’re praying against this in other local governments because the tension and panic were so high due to the threat from the indigenes.
“Also, we can no longer go to the bank to withdraw money to buy food again because most of the banks are shut.
” As a matter of fact the federal government of Nigeria should stop risking corps members’ lives in these volatile northern states. They should send us back to our various states because we’re now living in fear in
these crisis-ridden northern states. Please save our lives federal government of Nigeria.”
