Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Rivers State said it is yet to come to terms with  the sudden abandonment of the party by its Chairman, Uche Okwukwu, who personally started canvassing for the re-election of Governor Chibuike Amaechi, the PDP Governorship candidate in the Tuesday April 26 election, against its candidate, Dr. Abiye Sekibo.

Jerry Needam, the Spokesman for ACN in the state, and also the Director of Media and Publicity for Abiye Governorship Campaign, said that it is not yet clear to the party if Okwukwu has left the party or not as he has not officially resigned.

He said the party is shocked at their chairman’s decision to turn against the party he laboured to build in the state.

“Nobody was aware of his actions. His leaving the party has nothing to do with our governorship candidate, the party and the structure of the party.

“If that statement was actually from Uche Okwukwu, it shows the kind of person he is. On a personal note, he said “I will not betray Abiye Sekibo, whether he wins or not. When you live a life that can be tumbled over a pot of porridge, then you are not a man. You don’t need to take seriously a man who will lead people to war and abandon them at the war front,” Needam said.

On the effect of the chairman’s abandonment of the party at a time the party needed him most, the party’s party’s spokesman said: “We need courageous men. ACN camp is not in disarray. We are becoming stronger with more challenges. The challenges will continue to embolden us.”

Since Okwukwu deserted the party, he has made himself incommunicado as he switched of all his phones. There has not been any comment from him since he went on air to call on his supporters to vote massively for Governor Amaechi, the PDP Governorship candidate and Azubuike Nwanjokwu, PDP candidate for Ikwerre Constituency for the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Okwukwu had driven into the Silverbird Rhythm 93.7 Fm in Port Harcourt on  Easter Sunday and personally voiced a paid jingle in which he  said that “After due consultations with my supporters and Rivers people who believe in me, they should  vote massively for Governor Chibuike Amaechi and PDP in the next Governorship election and Azubuike Nwanjoku, the PDP candidate for Ikwerre Rivers House of Assembly.”
