INEC Will Ensure Prosecution of All Electoral Offenders -Commissioner

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has reiterated its determination to pursue the prosecution of all those caught committing electoral offences to the end, Solomon Soyebi, the Commission’s Commissioner for Information told journalists at the Abuja headquarters of the electoral agency this afternoon.

The INEC Commissioner also said from the reports the Commission has been receiving from its situation room in Abuja so far, today’s gubernatorial and State Houses of Assembly elections was peacefully conducted across the country.

He also dismissed reports of shortage of electoral materials in some parts of the country.

The Commissioner also said the Commission has not recorded any shortage of personnel for the conduct of the election despite the pull out of some Youth Corpers from the process.

While reacting to the reported arrest of a lady Youth Corper with some already thumb printed ballot papers in Osun State early today. Soyebi confirmed that INEC already has the report of the arrest and that the Youth Corper has also alleged that she was working together with an Assistant Electoral Officer. Soyebi said the Commission will not spare anybody that violates the electoral law, including its staff: “We want to say categorically that there is no sacred cow, anybody caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law and that is why we are not even ashamed to say our own staff is involved”, said Soyebi.

The INEC Commissioner also said the Nigerian Bar Association and the Police have been helping the Commission in the prosecution of those arrested for electoral offences in the parliamentary and the presidential polls.

He said the Police have already promised to furnish the Commission with the level of prosecution of the arrested offenders so far.
