Bank Managers, Security Guards Docked For Theft

Two managers and two securitymen of First Bank Plc, Onipanu Branch, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, have been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State on a three-count charge of stealing, conspiracy and felony.

Those arraigned were Akindele A. Olayemi, 43, Branch Manager; Osakwe Loviline Chioma, 40, Head of Operations; Pius Aiyejuni, 40 and Samson Olayioye, 39, who were security men at the branch.

They were arraigned in connection with the missing bag of a customer, Mrs. Temilade Regina Aina, containing items valued at N7.5 million.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the customer went for a transaction at the branch of the bank on 2 July, 2010, and kept her bag in a box with key number 16 but when she came out, she met the box being locked with padlock number 18, while her bag, was replaced with a male bag and all efforts to locate her bag proved abortive.

The missing bag, it was learnt, contained two Nigerian international passports with British Visa, one Nigeria national identity card, one driver’s licence, one Nokia phone, 100 pieces of gold necklace, 100 pieces of gold pendants, 100 pieces of gold earings, 50 pieces of gold hand bangles, a sum of N450,000, a bunch of keys, receipts of the above jewellery and other valuables.

The offences, according to Sergeant Gabriel Ekundayo, the prosecuting police officer, are punishable under Sections 516, 390 (9) and 515 of the Criminal Code, Cap. C.17, Vol.11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Olayemi, Osakwe Loviline Chioma, and Pius Aiyejuni, and Samson Olayioye and others still at large on 2 July, 2010, at First Bank Plc, Onipanu branch, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did steal a handbag containing the following items: two Nigerian international passports, with British visa, one National I.D card, one driver’s licence, one Nokia phone, one hundred pieces of gold necklace, one hundred pieces of gold pendants, one hundred pieces of gold earings, 50 pieces of gold hand bangles, a sum of N450,000, a bunch of keys, receipts of the above jewellery and other valuables, total value N7,510,000, property of one Temilade Regina Aina, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge while their counsel, Mrs. O.A. Babatunde, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. Helen Omisore, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

She ordered further that each surety must show evidence of payment of tax to the Lagos State government for three years; his address must be verified by the court and one of them must be a close family member to the defendant and must be self employed.

The case has been adjourned till 16 March, 2011 for trial.
