Lagos Creates New Waterfront Schemes

Lagosians have been assured that physical structures of the 1.04 million hectare Eko Atlantic City conceived by the state government will come on stream before the end of the year.

This assurance was given by the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Prince Adesegun Oniru, while briefing the media on the activities of his ministry as part of the celebration of the four years of the Fashola administration.

Disclosing that 2.4million square metres of land had been reclaimed, Oniru said the city targets 250,000 residents and 150,000 commuters who will come into the city for work daily.

Oniru also disclosed that five new waterfront schemes have been approved by the state governor as part of efforts to enhance the housing stock and boost recreational facilities in the state.

The schemes, he said are Amuwo Odofin, Okun Ajah, Owode/ Majidun, Lagoon Island (Under LIMF) and five recreation facilities in Epe, Badore, Majidun and Ijon-Kande.

He said proposals for the creation of other schemes at Okun Onibeju, Okun Akinlade, Epe Marina, Idale Whedako and Gberefun, have been forwarded to the governor for approval.

While assuring that the administration is committed to the protection of the state’s shoreline, the commissioner said shoreline protection structures, jetties and park are being constructed in various areas across the state.

He said the ministry is also working on a new policy on waterfronts land administration which will ensure the protection of the shoreline and forestall indiscriminate dredging.

According to the commissioner, 66 companies and individuals have been given permission and operational licences to undertake dredging and pilling and selling of sand across the state, adding that 153 applications had been received in this respect.
