Don’t Scrap NYSC, LG Boss Tells FG

Prince Mursiqu Yinka Durosinmi, Chairman, Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, has frowned at those calling for the scrapping of the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), saying rather, members should serve within their regions.

Durosinmi made the remark at his home town, Osolu, a riverine community in Ojo Local Government Area, while commenting on the post-election violence that broke out in the Northern part of the country which saw some corps members killed or maimed.

According to him, “I will not support the scrapping of the scheme, but support those who said members should serve within their regions, because there is no reason why we have to maim, kill and inflict criminal injustice. These people are serving their fatherland, why must some people try to attack them?

“The only solution to such act is to allow everyone to be serving within his or her region as I will not subscribe to the scrapping of the scheme.

The council boss, however, commended Professor Attahiru Jega, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for the successful conduct of this year’s general election.

The successful conduct of the elections, he said, shows that many Nigerians could still render credible services to the country, adding, “Jega should not be compared to Iwu, there is no basis for comparison. Professor Jega has been able to prove to the world that Nigerians can still conduct a peaceful election, which international communities could adjudge as fair and free. I can also say that the success of this election surpassed that of 1993.”
