The Senate on Tuesday commended INEC for ensuring the smooth conduct of the just concluded general elections.

Sen. President David Mark made the commendation at the resumption of the Senate plenary session in Abuja.

Mark commended Nigerians, security operatives, their agencies and institutions for helping to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.

‘`I congratulate all for a smooth, successful 2011 election.

“They have made history by participating in the globally acknowledged, freest and fairest general elections held in Nigeria,” Mark said.

He said the success of the election was predicated upon the Electoral Act of 2010 and the amendment of the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly.

He condoled with the families of the NYSC members who lost their lives in the course of electoral duties.

Mark said the Senate would continue to make laws that would alleviate the sufferings of the common man.

“Our decisions will never be driven by will, never be driven by political affiliations, tribe, religion or creed, but the fear of God and the collective will to build a prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
