Doctors in federal medical institutions in Enugu have embarked on a sympathy strike in solidaritry with their counterparts at the state University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH) who have been on industrial action for six months over non-payment of the new salary scale approved for them by the Federal Government.

The affected federal medical institutions are the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozala, the Neuro Psychiatric and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, all in Enugu.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited the hospitals reports that patients who had sought medical attention at the facilities were stranded, with no doctors in sight to attend to them.

The emergency unit and out-patients wards were also shut down.

At UNTH, all the clinics were not working, while the House Officers’ physiotherapists, lab scientists and nurses were seen attending to only patients who are on admission.

Some of the patients who spoke to NAN appealed to the doctors to return to work.
