Man Docked For Dangerous Driving

A commuter bus driver, Mukaila Oyewo, has been arraigned before the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting at Abule Egba for reckless driving which led to the death of a pedestrian and injuring three others.

The prosecuting police officer, Lugard Ahonle, alleged that the accused drove dangerously on public highway without consideration for the safety of other road users on 11 February, 2011 and killed a pedestrian, Anya Stephen, 25. He was also accused of injuring three others, Rafiu Ibrahim,, Olushola Tyin and Olayinka Yussuf.

The two-count charge is punishable under Section 29 of the Road Traffic Laws, Cap.216,, Vol. 7, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Count one reads: “That you, Mukaila Oyewo on 11 February, 2009 along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway by Super Bus Stop, in the Ikeja Magisterial District drove your vehicle on a public highway dangerously and recklessly and caused the death of Anya Stephen, 25 and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 28 of the Road Traffic Laws, Cap.R10, Vol.7, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.”

Count two of the charge reads:”That you, Mukaila Oyewo on 11 February, 2009 along the Lagos- Abeokuta expressway, Super Bus Stop in the Ikeja Magisterial District, drove your motor vehicle in a public highway in a dangerous and reckless manner and caused injuries to Rafiu Ibrahim,, Olushola Toyin, and Olayinka Yuissuf and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 29 of the Road Traffic Law, Cap.R10, Vol. 7, Laws of Lagos State, 2003.”
