NGF Plans Pre-inauguration Induction Course For Governors

The secretariat of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has said that it would organise a three-day induction course for newly-elected governors before they assume office.

Mr. Asishana Okauru, Director-General of the secretariat, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja. “We will be having a three-day induction course for elected governors and those who were re-elected for a second term.

“The induction will take place on May 17, 18 and 19 before the swearing in of the governors. “This is a tentative date and we will be collaborating with our foreign counterparts to facilitate the induction,” Okauru said.

He said the induction was the practice in the U.S. and other advanced democracies where newly-elected governors were not allowed to assume office until they went through such courses. “Such induction course had become necessary for Nigerian governors and their secretariat staff, especially on the premise that most of them are coming from different backgrounds and needed to be taught the rudiments of governance,” Okauru said.

He said the course was to expose the newly-elected governors to the rudiments of good governance as well as to re-orientate them on their new assignments.

“The essence is to induct them on issues relating to security, time management, financial prudence and how to relate with security agents, the police and other arms of government. ” Okauru said.
