A female member of a five-man robbery gang has been killed during a gun battle with policemen last night.
The gang engaged Diobu Police Patrol Team in a fierce gun battle at about 9.45pm, along Elechi beach area, of Port Harcourt, the oil rich Rivers State capital, Southsouth Nigeria.
During the fire fight, one of the male robbers and the only lady among them died as a result of the bullet wounds they sustained.
According to a statement made available to P.M.NEWS, and signed by Ben Ugwuegbulem, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, three other members of the gang believed to be nursing bullet wounds escaped.
Two AK 47 rifles, 83 rounds of 7.62 calibre live ammunition, eight AK 47 magazines, a giant iron cutter, a face mask, a sack and a Nissan Almera saloon car with registration No. FU 197 LRS used by the hoodlums were recovered.
The Commander of the police team, whose name was not given, also sustained a minor injury during the encounter.
It has been observed that since the conclusion of the general elections in the state, there has been an upsurge in robbery attacks.
Recently, a gang of suspected robbers engaged a police team attached to the Nkpolu Police Division, in Port Harcourt in a gun battle, wounding a member of the team.
