The Hawks dethroned the Super Eagles, who were the defending champions of the regional football championship in a pulsating final that ended 3-2.

Speaking with P.M.Sports, Hawks’ skipper, Zakari said the superiority of the Togolese team over the Nigerian side earned them victory in the final. According to him, the highly rated Nigerian side underrated Togo to their peril in the final

Zakari said that he did not believe that his team could go all the way to win the title. “We have created history by dethroning almighty Eagles on their home ground. This is to tell you that Togo football has risen again. We are not going to stop here, we are going to win more international laurels and ensure that we do well in the African Nations Cup qualifying series,” he said.

Commenting on the Eagles performance, the Togolese player said Eagles are a very good side, adding that the Hawks were lucky to win because they made used of their chances.

“There is no doubt that the Nigerian team are no pushover. I must confess that we played a difficult match of our life today (Saturday), but we thank God that we were able to overcome the Eagles who everybody rated as the best team in this tournament,” he said.

He said the problem of the Eagles was that they took the Togo team for granted and they paid for it. According to Zakari, football has changed as there are no minnows in African football anymore.

“Gone are the days when big names played football, but today if there is no commitment and aggressiveness on the part of a big team, such team will be disgraced by the so-called minnows. This was what happened to the Eagles today,” he said.
