Bus Thieves Docked

The police in Lagos have charged an alleged thief and five of his accomplices still at large before the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos for stealing a Volkswagen bus with registration number XS 407 AKD, valued at N250,000 belonging to Mr. Abasi Akinloye.

The accused, Kehinde Saliu and five others were alleged to have stolen the bus at 28, Jireh Jehova Street, Command, Lagos, on 17 March, 2011.

The two-count charge, according to the prosecutor, is punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol.11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The prosecutor disclosed that Kehinde and five others were arrested following a complaint lodged by Mr. Abasi Akinloye, owner of the Volkswagen bus. The police arrested Kehinde and five of his colleagues who later jumped bail.

Count two of the charge reads: “That you Kehinde Saliu and others now at large on the same date and the aformentioned magisterial district did steal one Volkswagen bus with registration number XS 407 AKD, valued at two hundred and fifty thousand naira, property of one Mr. Abasi Akinloye.’

The accused pleaded not guilty and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. A.T. Omoleye granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety who must be paying tax to the Lagos State government. The surety, she added must be gainfully employed.

The matter has been adjourned till 26 March, 2011 for continuation of trial.
