The Lagos State Executive Council on Monday approved the adoption of life-changing rewards as opposed to cash rewards as incentive for all and sports men and women representing the state at national and international sporting events.
Such rewards, according to the decision taken during the valedictory session of the State Executive Council chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), would be targeted towards guaranteeing meaningful career development and individual self-dependence for such athletes and would include preferential admissions to tertiary institutions, enrolment into technical and vocational skills acquisition centres, entrepreneurship training and support under the IGNITE Project of the State Government.
Governor Fashola, who spoke during the deliberation on the state’s participation in the National Sports Festival and other sporting events said the new policy which, according to him, has already been approved “forms a springboard for providing employment and scholarship for the athletes.
“We are moving from cash rewards to life-changing rewards for athletes representing the stateâ€, Governor Fashola said adding that the implementation of the policy is with immediate effect.
Other incentives, according to the policy aimed at de-emphasising the conventional system of monetary rewads, include direct employment into the ministries and agencies of government, business support, sponsored vocational training as well as other incentives that would enhance youth development, job creation and poverty alleviation. “The policy is aimed at making the athletes independent and self-supporting individualsâ€, Governor Fashola said.
