Post-Election Mayhem: Yakowa Inaugurates Panel Of Inquiry

Kaduna Governor, Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa has inaugurated an 11-man panel of inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the Kaduna presidential post-election violence in the state.

The commission of inquiry, headed by Justice Mohammed Lawal Bello, is to submit its report within eight weeks.

The commission also has was the mandate to give a lead into the individuals behind the crisis that left several hundreds dead and property destroyed.

While urging the committee to recommend ways to pacify and unite the affected victims, Yakowa however condemned the dastardly act and described it as inhuman and heartless.

“Please we urge you to do a thorough job to unravel the people behind the riot and also discharge your assignment with sincerity and without fear or favour,” the governor charged them.

He equally urged members of the commission to deploy their expertise while conducting investigation and come out with recommendations that would curb further crisis in future.

The governor assured the people of the state and Nigerians that the report and findings of the commission will be implemented, adding that those found wanting will be prosecuted according to the laws of the land.

Speaking after the inauguration, the Commission Chairman, Justice Muhammadu Bello gave assurance that the commission will discharge its duties without fear or favour, ill will or affection.

He called on the state government to take necessary action to implement the recommendations of the commission, adding, “implementing the recommendations will serve as a deterrent to others in future.”

The terms of reference of the commission, according to the governor, include: to inquire into or investigate, ascertain and identify the immediate and remote causes of the riot; identify individuals, organisations and other associations that might have contributed to the build-up to the riot by publishing such in the print and electronic media; and organising seminars, workshops and conferences.

Other members of commission include the chairman of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Rev. Sam Kujiyat, Jemaátu Nasir Islam, JNI Chairman, Alhaji Ja’afaru Makarfi , Rabiu Bako, Ali Barnabas Hadwya, Rev. Bauta Motty Abubakar, Stephen Bawa Manya, Mrs Hadiza Mailafiya and John Waje Baju who serves as secretary of the commission .
