Mini-Truck Drivers Seek Lagos Govt’s Help
Some truck drivers at the Mile 12 Market, Lagos on Thursday appealed to the state government to assist them in procuring their personal mini-trucks.
Alhaji Mummuda Ibrahim, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Perishable Branch, Mile 12, said that the members of the union desired that the government would provide trucks for them at subsidized rates.
The perishable branch of the market specializes in distributing tomatoes, peppers, onions and several vegetables.
Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that such a gesture would alleviate the suffering of the union members and give them a sense of belonging.
He said such a gesture would also serve as their dividends of democracy, adding that the union members would be willing to pay for the trucks in installments.
The unionist said that the high cost of procuring the vehicles and lack of funds had restricted the members to driving other people’s trucks.
“I am appealing to the state government to assist us in procuring mini-trucks due to the inability of our members to pay the high cost.
“We want the state government to buy the mini-trucks for us as they did for taxi drivers; our members would be paying.
“It will reduce our suffering,†Ibrahim said.
The chairman also urged the state government to stop law enforcement agents from harassing the union members while conveying their goods.
