At least 1,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ikare-Akoko, headquarters of the Akoko North East Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday defected to the ruling Labour Party, LP, in the state.
While receiving the new members, the State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, described LP as the party of the masses, saying that the valuable contributions of the party to the socio-economic development of the state in the last two years cannot be under-estimated.
Dr. Mimiko, who was represented by his Deputy Alhaji Alli Olanusi, noted that the fortunes of the people of the state have improved significantly, because of the partyâ€™s people-oriented programmes that cut across all state of development in the 18 local government areas of the state.
The governor congratulated the new members for taking the right decision of joining the ruling party at the right time and enjoined them to use their wealth of experience to promote the idea of the party.
He equally urged them to join hands with his administration in a bid to transform the state and lift it to greater heights.
In his remark, the Chairman of Labour Party in the State, Dr Olaiya Oni congratulated the defectors on their decision and choice of Labour Party.
He noted that the next two years would witness a monumental development in the state as â€œthe government will continue to embark on laudable projects and programmes that will impact positively on the lives of the people in all ramifications.
The Leader of the defectors, Chief Elewe Isiaka Ademuwagun attributed his defection to Labour Party to the giant strides recorded so far by the party in the state.
