'Okada' Rider Assaults Cop

A 24-year old commercial motorcyclist, a.k.a. okada rider, Peter Udeme, has been arraigned before the Shomolu Magistrate’s Court, Shomolu, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria for assaulting a police officer.

P.M.NEWS gathered that on 30 May, 2011 along Oluwatoyin Street, Ladi-lak, Lagos, Udeme gave police Constable Akinropo Oluwole, attached to Pedro Police Station, Shomolu Division, a blow on the left side of his face, He was also accused of stealing the officer’s Samsung mobile phone.

He was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and stealing, which according to the prosecutor, Inspector A. Adegoke are punishable under Section 356(2), 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol. II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Count one of the Charge reads: “That you, Peter Udeme on 30 May, 2011 at about 2p.m. along Oluwatoyin Street, Ladi-lak, Lagos in the Yaba Magisterial District did assault police Constable Akinropo Oluwole, by giving him blow on the left side of his face and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 356(2) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol. II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Count two reads: “That you, Peter Udeme on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district did steal one Samsung GT5532 mobile phone, valued at N23,0000 property of one police Constable Akinropo Oluwole, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap.C.17, Vol. II, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

Udeme pleaded not guilty and the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi admitted him on bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety.

The case has been adjourned till 22 July, 2011 for trial.
