Nigerian governors should not be judged alike, says Amaechi

The Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has urged Nigerians to exercise caution in comparing the performances and achievements of various governors in the country.

Governor Amaechi stated this while speaking at a special victory party held in his honour at the Atlantic Hall of Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, organized by Professor and Mrs. Olusegun Okunu.The Governor, who is also the Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), explained that the statutory allocation and internal revenue base of states across the country are not the same, and therefore it would be inappropriate to compare the performances and achievements of governors throughout the country on the same pedestal.

The governor, who applauded the state Governors for their current competitive spirit in trying to develop their respective states, noted that the level of expected performance would however be dependent on available funds to each individual state.

Governor Amaechi who admitted that the challenges of steering the ship of state are enormous however, described regular power supply and security of life and property as strategic to economic development of Nigeria.

“You cannot address development without addressing power and security, I believe that to develop the country we must address poverty and hunger”, he stated.The State Chief Executive disclosed that Rivers state generates enough Power, but the problem remains in the area of distribution, noting that the state government had since set up an Electricity Distribution Committee, which is headed by the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company, assuring that the state plans to achieve 24hours uninterrupted electricity supply before the end of 2012.He noted that the new sports complex at the Greater Port Harcourt City, housing the games village and the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, is a Sports destination in Nigeria, and enjoined all Nigerians to support President Goodluck Jonathan in the quest to promote good governance.The Governor also reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to protect lives and property, stressing that the government has procured and placed detective cameras at strategic locations in Port Harcourt and its environs, as part of efforts to ensure adequate surveillance of the state.

He further disclosed that government would also purchase two helicopters which will be deployed for surveillance operations in the state.

Governor Amaechi emphasized that with cameras strategically located to detect crimes, the helicopters would be used for timely intervention and arrest of criminals, adding that security of lives and property remains top priority of his administration.

Earlier, Prof. and Mrs. Olusegun Okunu, said the event was organized to celebrate the re-election of Governor Amaechi and his team, and in appreciation of his support to their family.

Highlight of the victory party was the staging of a Command Performance of the play titled “GRIP-AM” written by late Professor Ola Rotimi and directed by renowned Theatre Practitioner Yibo Koko.

The event also featured a solo performance by Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar Fame.
