June 12: Amosun Leads Democracy Walk

The entire city of Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State this morning stood still as the state marked the 18th anniversary of the 12 June 1993 election that was annulled by the Ibrahim Babangida-led junta.

The democracy walk led by the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosu began at exactly 7.40 a.m. at Ake Palace.

Civil society groups, students, civil servants, artisans and market men and women joined in the walk through the entire Abeokuta.

There was a stop-over at the MKO Abiola family house at Oja Agbo area of Abeokuta and prayers were offered.

Speaking at the rally at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Comrade Biola Soetan, a former president of the Students Union Government of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, commended the state governor for believing in 12 June as the real Democracy Day.

The last born of the late Kudirat Abiola, Mumuni, speaking on behalf of the Abiola family, said: “I was nine years old when the election was held. I was wondering what my parents were looking for despite all that we had then.

“But I have realised the mission and vision of my parents and that is why I have vowed to keep up the struggle.”
