The 33rd CBN Open Women’s Singles winner, Abiola Akewula plans to consolidate on her feat at the All Nigeria Open tournament, by winning a gold medal in the tennis event of the forthcoming National Sports Festival.
Akwula defeated Blessing Samuel in straight sets of 6-4,7-5 to win the CBN Open women’s crown.
She told Tennis Special after her heroic feat at the finals of the CBN Open at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, that her target is to improve on her CBN Open victory.
According to the Port Harcourt Tennis Academy player, “I’m going to the Sports Festival with an ambition of grabbing a gold medal in the tennis event.
“The only way to consolidate on the victory I achieved at the CBN Open is to win the tennis gold medal during the Sports Festival. This is my target and I will get down to work as soon as possible to achieve this.â€
The Ogun State-born tennis star, who will compete for Rivers State in the fiesta, beginning on 27 June, won the prize money of N400,000 and the privilege of attending the Tennis Training Academy in the Netherlands, courtesy of CBN management. She would also be part of Team Nigeria to the All Africa Games.
“I’m glad that things are working well for me this year,†she said. “I hope to make use of the rare opportunity from the CBN Open to ensure that the year ends well.â€
