In a bid to complement government’s effort on education, a non government organisation, Academic Excellence Initiative (AEI), has organised a counseling programme for secondary school students in Surulere area of Lagos state.
Tagged, tagged Education Guidance and Counselling, the programme was held last week at the Conference Hall of Ansar-Ud-Deen Grammar School, Surulere, Lagos, to assist students to overcome failures in examinations.
In a chat with Campus Square, the organisation’s project officer, Mr. Hafeez Oguntola, said “we have critically studied the incessant mass failure in examinations, especially in WASCE and discovered that if nothing meaningful is done, it will affect the future education of our children. That is why we organised this programme to help the students in reducing the rate of mass failure.â€
Also speaking shortly after he delivered a lecture on Success Strategy in WASCE, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos Education District, Victoria Island, Mr. Sulaiman Ogunmuyiwa, lauded the organisers, saying “it’s going to help the students manage their time, particularly when preparing for examinations.â€
Ogunmuyiwa attributed the failure to societal distractions mostly emanating from entertainment. According to him, “there are so many distractions that prevent students from preparing ahead for examinations. These include sports, particularly football, foreign soap operas, talent hunt programmes and drink and win promos among others.
