An Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, has remanded a 24-year-old man who was alleged to have murdered his sister, 23, on 19 April 2011 while sleeping at 7, Ajose Street, Mende, Maryland, Lagos at about 3:40 am.
In his statement to the police, the accused said there was no quarrel between him and his late sister but that he did not know what woke him up in the midnight and ordered him to kill his sister.
He told the police that after he hit and killed his sister with a stick, he went away with her N5,900.
He said he came back to the house later and discovered that his sister had died.
He was arraigned on one-count charge of unlawful killing, which according to the Prosecuting Police Officer, Essien Emmanuel, an Inspector of police, is punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code, C17, vol. ii. laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty but his plea was not taken.
The magistrate, Mrs. M. O. Olagunju, ordered that he be remanded in prison custody, pending the advice of the Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The matter has been adjourned till 19 July, 2011.
