A 28-year old man, Abasiama Godwin Umoh has been arrested by the police at the Ifesinachi Motor Park at Fadeyi, Lagos for stealing a bag.
The suspect allegedly stole Miss Doris Agbogwuâ€™s bag at the motor park on 28 April. The bag, the police disclosed, contained important credentials, expensive clothes and personal effects valued at N200,000.
The accused was arraigned on 6 June before the Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge which the prosecutor, Sergeant Inugbe alleged was punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol. 11, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
Count two of the charge reads: “That you, Abasiama Godwin Umoh on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district with intent to extort the sum of fifty thousand naira from Mrs. Ifeyinwa Agbowu did threaten her with injury or death and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 406 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 17, Vol.11, Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and the magistrate, Mrs. A.T. Omoyele granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties whose home and office addresses must be verified.
The magistrate directed further that the sureties must be tax payers and gainfully employed.
The matter has been adjourned till 1 July for further hearing.
