No fewer than 64 persons were killed while 339 others sustained injuries in 165 road mishaps in the FCT in the past three months, the FRSC has announced.

Making the announcement at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Funmibi Olawoyin, identified over speeding, dangerous driving, impaired vision and undue assumptions as some of the factors responsible for the accidents.

Olawoyin who said the crashes occurred mostly in the city centre at weekends, however, disclosed that the command had taken some measures to address the problem.

He said the measures include weekend patrols and strategic patrol tagged “operation free flow“ in some identified road corridors in the FCT as well as enforcement of traffic rules.

The sector commander warned that stunt practices with vehicles and power bikes in the city was illegal and unacceptable.

He said the command was collaborating with other security agencies to arrest and prosecute those engaging in the act, adding that there was no race track in the FCT.

“The command wants to make it abundantly clear that there is no race tract in the FCT. None of the roads, no matter how free, should be used for such activities,“ he said.

He advised motorists to adhere to safety measures such as the use of good tyres, functional wipers and light with clear windscreen and to use the road with caution during the rainy season.

Olawoyin also disclosed that the command towed away over 100 abandoned vehicles from various locations in the city within the past three months.

He said that the command had taken steps to ensure that vehicles without plate numbers did not ply the roads, adding that the ban on the use of tinted motor glasses was being enforced.
