As part of efforts to ensure a smooth 65th Athletics Federation Championship, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State, has released the sum of N250million to the organisers.
The tournament, which used to be sponsored by Mobil, will be held in Calabar from tomorrow till Saturday. It will serve as trials for the Olympics Games and All Africa Games. President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Solomon Ogba, while commending Governor Imoke for making the funds available for the competition, said AFN has increased the prize money for winners.
â€œThe prize money for this year has been improved for both the classics and premium categories,â€ he said.For the premium, Ogba said the prize money for gold medal is now N100,000, while N75,000 and N50,000 will go to the silver and bronze medalists respectively.
He said the classic category will attract N75,000 for gold medalists, N50,000 for silver medalists and N30,000 for bronze medalists.
P.M.Sports can report that four batches of top Nigerian athletics have converged onÂ Calabar ahead of the competition.The AFN boss said many home-based athletes would compete alongside their foreign-based counterparts, adding that athletes like Stanley Gbagbeke, Glory Asumu, Blessing Okudubaere, Leslie Ajumola, Chizoba Akubueze, Shehu Adibu and several other athletes will participate in the three days championships.
