Fashola Splashes N27m On Team Lagos

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State has splashed more than N27million on the athletes who represented the state at the KADA 2009 National Sports Festival in Kaduna.

During a brief ceremony held at the Mobolaji Bank Anthony Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, Lagos, the athletes were given Automated Teller Machine, ATM, cards to withdraw their money in any Zenith Bank. Gold medal winners received N100,000, silver medal winners received N75,000 and bronze medal winner gets N50,000. Athletes who took part at the KADA Games but failed to win any medal were also given N20,000 for participating.

Chairman of the state’s Sports Council, Agboola Dabiri, disclosed that the reward would have come before now but for the repeated postponement of the Garden Games 2011 Sports Festival which begins next week in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

One of the athletes, Arnold Fatolu, a karate gold medallistn commended the gesture of Governor Fashola, adding that the reward should motivate Team Lagos going to the Garden Games to do the state proud.

Meanwhile, a farewell ceremony will be held for Team Lagos to this year’s Sports Festival tomorrow at the Rowe Park, Yaba. Governor Fashola is expected to bid the athletes bye in a ceremony put together by the Sports Council before the team leave for the Games on Monday.
