Police Arrest Beninois For Manslaughter

Detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti Yaba, Lagos State, Southwest, Nigeria, have arrested a Beninois, Dosu Joshua, for manslaughter.

Dosu, a security man at Alagbado area of the Lagos state, was alleged to have killed one Taye Ogabi, by hitting him with a rake on 2 March, 2011, at about 2 a.m.

The accused, investigations revealed, hit the deceased with a rake on the head in an attempt to arrest him.

At the conclusion of police investigation, the accused was arraigned before the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, Lagos on a one-count charge of manslaughter.

The offence, according to the prosecuting officer, Corporal Babaji Ishiaku is punishable under Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Cap. C17, Vol.2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The Beninois pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties by Mrs. M.O. Olajuwon, the presiding magistrate.

Olajuwon also ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the accused and that the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos state government and have their residential addresses verified by the prosecutor.

Olajuwon also ordered that the case file should be duplicated and sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

The matter has been adjourned till 27 July, 2011, for DPP’s advice.
