Despite the epileptic power supply in the country, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved an increase in electricity tariff from N1.50k per kilowatt to N8.50k.
The regulatory commission, in a statement last week, announced that it has directed all electricity distribution companies operating in the country to commence, from 1 July, the implementation of the 16.5 per cent marginal increase approved since 2008.
The statement signed by NERC Head of Media and Public Relations, Maryam Abubakar, however, warned the companies which are under Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to ensure improved services to the consumers.
The regulatory body further reminded the companies of their basic responsibilities to customers especially in areas of complaints, connection and disconnection procedures, service demands and meter reading.
“We will be resolute and uncompromising in ensuring compliance and imposing sanction on CEOs and managers of companies that fall short of the required standard.
Ironically, the current increase is coming at a time when power supply nationwide has worsened by crashing from 3100mw to 2800mw. The development has been condemned by many stakeholders who view the crash as a failure on the part of government.
