Man Arrested For Buying Stolen Phones

The police at Onikan Police Division, Ikoyi, Lagos , southwest Nigeria, have arrested a man who allegedly specialises in robbing residents at Obalende Police Barracks at midnight.

The police said the accused was arrested after he allegedly sneaked into the apartment of Igbinovia Henry at Block 23, Romm 2, Obalende Barracks, at about 5 am to steal three GSM handsets valued at N40,000 and escaped to sell them to a buyer at Obalende Road, Ikoyi.

According to a source, nemesis caught up with him in the barracks when the person he sold one of the Tecno phones to could not unlock it.

He was said to have unknowingly taken it to one of the owners of the stolen phones to unlock it.

While the victim was trying to unlock the handset, he discovered that it was his phone which was stolen from his brother’s apartment. He raised an alarm and the man was arrested and handed over to the police.

He, however, said to have denied stealing the phone, rather, he claimed to have bought it from a man he identified as Smith.

He led the police to the seller who also led the police to arrest Smith.

During interrogation, Smith was alleged to have confessed to the crime and was charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a 2-count charge of stealing.

According to Inspector Agoi, the offence is punishable under Section 412 and 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap C17, vol. 2, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate admitted him to bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the matter.
